Our Story

A family, a lake, and a second chance for a forgotten property.

The Place — Why Musoma?

Musoma is one of those places that surprises you. Most travellers pass on the outskirts on the way to the Serengeti or Kenya without driving into the township. We think that is a missed opportunity.

The town sits on the eastern shore of Lake Victoria — Africa's largest lake and the world's second-largest freshwater lake. The water stretches to the horizon in every direction. Fishing boats drift across the surface at dawn. Kingfishers, eagles, herons and cormorants fill the shoreline and the sky. The sunsets here are among the most spectacular in East Africa.

But Musoma is more than scenery. It is a working town — a hub for trade, fishing, and cultural life in the Mara Region. It is also one of the most strategically placed towns in northern Tanzania: 88 km from the Serengeti's Ndabaka Gate, 35 km from Butiama and the Mwalimu Nyerere Heritage Site, 80 km from the Kenyan border, and just 2 km from the airport.

The Resort

This property was acquired by a family friend in the 1980s and had seen its days of glory. Over the years, it fell into disrepair — abandoned and dilapidated. Recently, the owner approached us to take over and transform it into a tourist and relaxation destination.

If that story sounds familiar, it should. Mwitongo Lodge Butiama began exactly the same way — an abandoned family property brought back to life. Both properties now thrive as tourist hotels and relaxation oases, sharing the same family, the same philosophy, and the same commitment to genuine Tanzanian hospitality.

Today, Mwitongo Beach Resort & Spa offers 10 spacious rooms overlooking Lake Victoria, with 5 glamping dome tents being added soon. The property includes a swimming pool, a spa, and conference facilities, with an on-site gym coming soon.

Meet the Hosts

Mwitongo Beach Resort & Spa is run by the same family behind Mwitongo Lodge Butiama — Neema and Calogero. Neema is Tanzanian; Calogero is Italian. Together, they have lived across Europe and travelled widely through Africa, Europe, and Asia before settling in Tanzania in 2016.

After transforming Mwitongo Lodge Butiama from an abandoned family facility into a thriving boutique hotel, they have done it again with Mwitongo Beach Resort & Spa — this time bringing their vision to the shores of Lake Victoria.

They believe that the best hospitality comes from people who genuinely care about where they live and who they welcome. When you stay at Mwitongo Beach, you are a guest in their home.
